Warming Socks to Help Your Immune System Fight Colds & Flus

The warming sock treatment is a simple at home treatment that I often find myself telling patients and friends about this time of year. And if you are a parent, then you especially want to know about this effective home remedy for when your little ones aren’t feeling well.

For the best results, you want to begin using warming socks at the first signs of illness and continue the treatment nightly until you feel better. Often patients prefer to do this at night, but if you feel a cold, flu, cough or congestion creeping up on you during the day, you can always couple this treatment with a nap.

Remember to check in with a doctor if you are concerned about you or your child ‘s health. While this is a great at home treatment for minor conditions, it should not be used as a substitute to seeing your physician. If you are the least bit concerned about cold or flu symptoms, give your doc a call.

Benefits:

  • Reduce sinus congestion
  • Regulate fevers
  • Reduce nighttime cough by decreasing lung congestion

How to:

  1. Begin by running the white socks under cold water until the are wet. Ring them out. You should have damp cold socks.
  2. Warm the feet in a hot foot bath for about 5 minutes (careful that it’s not too hot, especially for children). Use the towel to dry them thoroughly.
  3. Immediately following the foot bath, place one white sock on each foot and cover with wool socks.
  4. Get into bed under warm blankets and avoid becoming chilled.
